Dear Friends of Lee Montessori,
On behalf of the entire Lee Montessori Family, I am pleased to answer the question many of you have been asking:
Question: Where will Lee Montessori's East End Campus call home?
Answer: The Birney School at 2501 Martin Luther King Jr Ave SE
We have just signed an agreement to lease the space for the 2019-2020 school year. Some more details:
Great Neighbors! We will be co-locating with our friends at Excel Academy, a DCPS all-girls elementary school (PK-8) led by Tenia Pritchard, who is friends and colleagues with our principal at Lee Montessori Brookland, Megan Hubbard and Lee Board member, Eric Bethel. Our landlord will ensure appropriate separation of space between our respective programs, but it's great to know that we'll have a great relationship with our upstairs neighbors!
Great Neighborhood! The building is 1/4 mile from the Anacostia Metro station, ideal for working parents. It's also adjacent to a new real estate development project at Barry Farm (details here). This project isn't without controversy, and we've already been in touch with representatives of the Barry Farm Tenants and Allies Association to ensure that we are supportive and respectful of the entire community.
Ground Floor Access to Outdoor Space. The Ground floor has historically been used for Early Childhood programming and is therefore set up for a great deal of our programming, including the ability for children to get outside to play and explore in a safe environment.
Some Details Remain. We are still finalizing renovation and usage plans. We'll be partnering with Principal Pritchard and our landlord (Building Pathways) on things like pickup/drop-off plans, modernizing the interior of our space, and more.
We're desperate to give tours! We're working to give walkthroughs of the space so we can show families how we will implement our high quality Montessori model and foster the physical, social, emotional, and academic growth of our students in this location. We hope to offer those in the next 2-3 weeks.
That’s all I have for now, but please do not hesitate to email with additional questions and be on the lookout for tours and other information. And, if you haven’t already done so, we encourage you to apply by March 1 at www.myschooldc.org!
