Lee Montessori to Bring 1st Public Montessori School to Southeast DC
Tier 1 Charter School to serve 90 PreK students in Wards 7 and 8 for 2019-20 school year
Washington, DC (December 18, 2018) – The DC Public Charter School Board approved the expansion of Lee Montessori’s charter at its monthly board meeting last night, enabling the high-performing, Tier 1 school to establish the first standalone public Montessori school East of the Anacostia River. Located in Brookland in Ward 5, Lee Montessori PCS is one of only five public Montessori schools in the District and the only public elementary school in DC to earn Recognition-level accreditation from Association Montessori Internationale for the United States (AMI-USA) for ages 3-12. By 2023, combined enrollment at both campuses will exceed 650 students.
“We believe deeply in increasing access to public Montessori programs for children in DC, regardless of their race, background, or zip code,” said Dominique Fortune, Chair of Lee Montessori’s Board of Directors. “We are proud of our work over the past five years, grateful to the Public Charter School Board for their vote of support, and excited for the opportunity to broaden the Lee Montessori community,”
Teachers of the Montessori method present lessons to students in multi-age classrooms and offer a level of individualized attention rarely found in traditional schools. Students are responsible for following through with their own repetition and learning process under the observation of teachers. This method is showing results: Lee Montessori’s student-level outcomes exceed national averages, particularly in year-to-year student growth. PreK assessments consistently score above the 90th percentile, with social-emotional learning reaching the 98th percentile in 2017-18.
“Lee Montessori will directly address the severe opportunity gap facing the residents East of the Anacostia River and bring a model that families in Wards 7 and 8 have sought for years,” said Alex Brown, incoming Head of School for the new Lee Montessori campus. “Montessori schools are increasingly gaining notice for their success in educating students of color as well as low-income and at-risk students. Expanding our footprint to this area will help children and families access new tools to empower themselves and their community.”
Lee Montessori opened in Ward 5 in 2014 with the aim of addressing severe educational inequities in the District and now has one of the most diverse student populations in DC. The school currently serves 210 students in grades PreK-5. While fewer than 1,400 students in the city attend a public Montessori program, Lee Montessori’s expansion will offer a proven public Montessori model to an area where high-quality educational opportunities are few and where the level of poverty is still the highest in the city.
